Types of Employee Turnover

Turnover accounts for all separations, both people who leave the company on their own accord and those who are terminated or part of a reduction in force or round of layoffs. It also includes the retirements, deaths and disabilities. Basically it can be divided in to two parts. That is Voluntary turnover & involuntary turnover.

Voluntary turnover

These are the employees who left the company by choice, It can happen due to take a new job at a different company (people who are looking for green pastures), pursue educational opportunities, for personal reasons or to retire.

Involuntary turnover

It’s the termination of employees who are terminated for failing to meet performance standards and job expectations, have committed misconduct, are part of a seasonal layoff as well as employees who are part of a company-wide layoff.

Desirable vs. Undesirable Turnover

Those who are terminated from their positions, not including unavoidable layoffs, fall into the category of desirable turnover because newer, more diligent and skilled employees can replace them.

When it comes to voluntary turnover, the loss of people who left the company for new roles, not those who retired, is considered undesirable.

  1. If employee turnover high it means not working of all HR functions well.sometime market trend also afect to this. However HR should attention on the employee turnover level.because some internal issue not communicated to HR but high employee turnover reflect sometime its in particular department. But if HR see the employee turnover increasing early they can change the policies of HR or practices of HR which badly affected.

  2. Would like to add, Employee turnover can be classified into two categories: voluntary and involuntary. It is possible for an employee to quit or resign voluntarily, whereas involuntary turnover happens when the employer takes the decision for the employee to depart. Also, management can practice, VRS schemes when necessary and it can also count as volunteer turnover.

  3. Turnover is natural for any organization. While there are many reasons for employees to leave a department or organization, some reasons for turnover are negative, some expect turnover and are completely normal. The worst thing is when turnover happens for negative reasons and / or turnover happens at an unexpected pace.

    1. When we evaluate the reasons for turn over, most time it's happen due to the miss behavior of people who are supervising. Other this is employees are leaving companies due to the personal reasons. The worst part is ,companies will loose their experienced employees & will have bear extra cost to recruit suitable persons.

  4. Turnover may take many forms. It can be classified as “internal” or “external.” Internal turnover involves employees leaving their current positions and taking new positions within the same organization.

Both positive (such as increased morale from the change of task and supervisor) and negative (such as project/relational disruption, or the Peter Principle) effects of internal turnover exist. Therefore, it may be equally important to monitor this form of turnover to monitor its external counterpart.

Internal turnover might be moderated and controlled by typical HR mechanisms, such as an internal recruitment policy or formal succession planning. Internal turnover, called internal transfers, is generally considered an opportunity to help employees in their career growth while minimizing the more costly external turnover.

A large number of internal transfers leaving a particular department or division may signal problems in that area unless the position is a designated stepping stone position.
